We’re here to care for your pet. See what's changed.

Remember the day your pet came into your life?

Maybe they were scared, scrambling to hide behind an armchair or a bed. Or maybe they were excited, jumping around as if all was right with the world. We trust it wasn’t long before they became a loved member of your family. Through all of the ups and downs, pets are always our loyal friends. And while you can’t always count on them to behave, you can count on them to give you love and affection.

We’re there for the good times and the bad.

This love and affection are what inspire us at Grandview. You care for your pet and want to keep them as healthy as possible. We get it! Pets are some of the best life companions we can have. And caring for them can be complex. Throughout their life, you’ll be asked to make difficult choices. We want to be there for you and your pet during the good times and walk alongside you through the more difficult times.

A promise we take to heart.

To show you we mean it, we’ve developed The Grandview Promise: a promise to make the experience of looking after your pet’s health more enjoyable.

The Grandview Promise

A great experience.

From the moment you come inside to the moment you leave, we want your experience to be a great one. That means you’ll always be welcomed into our clean waiting room with a smile.

On-time appointments.

We’re pet owners too, so we understand that long waits aren’t something you want. That’s why we promise to meet you at the appointed time. If something comes up, we’ll be sure to tell you.

You won’t feel rushed.

We promise to take the time to explain everything related to your pet’s health in plain language and answer all your questions.

Honest, professional opinions.

Caring for your pet is complex. That’s why we promise to empower you to make the right decision. We do this by being fully transparent and presenting you with the options we believe are right for your pet and your budget.

What other happy pet owners have to say...

“Five stars is not a high enough rating for this animal hospital. I've been going here for five years and the staff and service is amazing. Every member of the staff is great to deal with and truly cares about your pet. This hospital has three veterinarians who are all terrific. They care for your animal like it's their own.”

– Ben. P
“Friendly, courteous, professional and knowledgeable staff. Also very accommodating. My dog had worms and needed treatment, unfortunately I had a fall the day before and couldn't bring her in… I brought the worm in a baggie to confirm diagnosis and was sent home with treatment for both dogs. Great compassionate service with reasonable prices!”

– Kim Andrews
“Once we got our puppy Blue, we needed to find a vet. This one stood out to us with excellent reviews and we have not been disappointed! Always honest and very friendly. Blue’s neutering went extremely well and he is happy as can be!”

– Josh Nielen
“We've been taking our pets here since 2004...even after our move to Hamilton and back to Burlington we still come here. Understanding and knowledgeable staff that genuinely care for your pet.”

– Joshua Reynolds
“Grandview is a great animal hospital. They take their time to listen to you and your concerns, and they treat your pets with respect. I should've switched animal hospitals to Grandview long ago.”

– Elaine North
“I can't thank Dr. James enough for the kind and compassionate treatment he gave to not only our cat Buddy but us as well. Explaining everything as we went along and helping us make a difficult decision.”

– Elsie Chappel

Your Veterinary Team

Dr. James Schulenberg

A Niagara native, James grew up with many family pets, so his love for animals developed at a young age. Trained at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, he worked as a vet in the Flamborough area before joining the team at Grandview. In December 2010, James became the owner of Grandview. He enjoys building relationships with clients and their pets and has a special interest in internal medicine and animal nutrition. One of his favourite opportunities as a veterinarian was to travel to Tanzania with Christian Veterinary Missions to provide volunteer veterinary education, training and services. When he isn’t working, James enjoys hiking, boating, and spending time with family and friends. He lives in Niagara with his wife, Michelle, their four children and their many pets, including a dog, cat, rabbit and rat. He’s also an active board member of Hamilton Regional Emergency Veterinary Clinic.

Dr. Ashley Jeffs

Ashley grew up on a hobby farm in Niagara, where her passion for animals began. After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, she pursued her childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian at St. George’s University in Grenada, completing her final year at the University of Georgia. For the first three years of her career, Ashley worked at a busy, small animal hospital in Rome, NY. In 2014, she started working at Grandview Animal Hospital. She has a special interest in soft tissue surgery. In her spare time, she enjoys travelling, staying active and spending time with her family — including her pets!

Dr. Jan Crockatt

Jan’s veterinary career has spanned more than three decades. Starting in farm animal practice in the 1980s, she moved to regulatory medicine with the federal government while she was bringing up a young family. For the last 20+ years, she has continued to practice companion animal medicine in the Hamilton, Brantford and Cambridge areas. She lives on a small acreage with her husband and several cats, dog, horses and chickens — and feels fortunate to be able to continue working in the best vocation in the world!

Tara

Registered Veterinary Technician

Tara grew up on the Stoney Creek mountain and always knew she was going to work in veterinary medicine. She graduated with an honours degree in Animal Biology from the University of Guelph, a Vet Office Management certificate from Mohawk College and a Veterinary Technician diploma with honours from Northern College. Tara is a self-described nerd, bookworm and sports addict. She enjoys spending time with her big family, which includes her rescue dog, Mopsy, and her three cats, Ace, Edison and Emma.

Shayna

Registered Veterinary Technician

Shayna was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She has always had a passion for animals, which prompted her to begin her career in veterinary medicine. Shayna graduated with a Veterinary Technician diploma with honours from Red River College. Shortly after graduation, she moved east to Smithville, Ontario and before long began to work at Grandview. Shayna enjoys staying active as well as spending time with friends and — of course — her cat Jackson.

Cindy

Registered Veterinary Technician

Having grown up with a variety of pets, Cindy knew from a young age that she wanted to work with animals. Her passion for the health and wellbeing of animals made her decision to pursue veterinary technology at the Ridgetown Campus of the University of Guelph an easy one. She graduated with honours in 2011 and joined the Grandview team shortly after that. In the clinic, she especially enjoys surgery, diagnostics and connecting with clients over the love of their pets. Cindy is busy as she works part-time and is raising a young family but loves spending time camping, taking road trips, and playing soccer. She has a soft spot for senior pets that need adopting and hopes to take home a rescue dog in the near future.

Nikki

Veterinary Technician

Nikki grew up with a love of any living creature she could find and had a special interest in horseback riding as a child. This fuelled her education at Ridgetown College, where she graduated in 2009. Immediately after school, she worked with exotic animals, including elephants and big cats, but returned to a small animal clinic in 2014. Nikki joined our Grandview team in the spring of 2015 as an experienced technician but also a bubbly personality! She has a passion for animal behaviour and training and puts that into practice on her hobby farm, which includes Diesel, her Border Collie, Theo, her Lab mix, Gus, her cat, as well as goats and horses. You can be sure Nikki is lovingly treating your pet as her own when they come into Grandview Animal Hospital.

Lauren

Groomer

Lauren joined our team as our groomer in 2016 and has been a great addition! She comes to us with experience as a mobile groomer, and she has also studied veterinary terminology at Mohawk College. All throughout high school, she volunteered at our local SPCA, giving her years of experience handling and caring for animals. When she's not in the clinic, Lauren loves reading, cooking, and exploring new places with her family. Much of her time is spent with her American Eskimo, Finnian, with whom she enjoys hiking our beautiful area.

Angela

Receptionist

Angela was new to the Veterinary field when she joined Grandview as a Receptionist in November 2018. A lifelong resident of the Hamilton/Stoney Creek area, she brings several years of experience in a variety of customer service roles and is one of the friendly voices you’ll hear when you call our office. Angela spends her spare time reading, renovating her century-old home and spending time with her family and her cat, Jack.

Josephine

Receptionist

Josephine joined our health care team in the fall of 2016 and has been a great addition to our front office staff. She grew up in nearby Hamilton and has an administrative background. Whether you speak with Josephine on the phone or in-person at the front desk, her genuine love for animals shines through, and she would be happy to assist you and your pet in any way she can! In her downtime, Josephine loves spending time outdoors, on the beach, or with her beloved cats Oreo, Luna and Sammi.

Over 30 years of happy pets and happier owners.

Old owners of Grandview Animal Hospital
Grandview is located at the foot of the beautiful Niagara Escarpment in the heart of the Winona community. From this location, it has served owners and their pets in Hamilton, Stoney Creek, and the greater Grimsby and Smithville area for over 30 years.

In the early 1950s, Dr. Aiken, a family physician, built the building and began a family medical practice. The building across the road accommodated the local pharmacy and explains the presence of these office buildings in a largely residential area. Many of our longtime clients can recall coming to Grandview for their own doctor’s appointments as children and adults, only to have it serve as their pet’s hospital today! Over time, Dr. Aiken moved his practice into Grimsby, and the office building changed hands over the years, becoming both a construction company and a real estate office for awhile.

In 1989, Dr. Tom Nugent bought the building and established Grandview Animal Hospital. He served as veterinarian until his retirement in 2004. The practice was sold to Dr. Ivan Bos, and in 2007, Dr. James Schulenberg began working as a veterinarian with Dr. Bos. In 2010, Dr. Schulenberg took over ownership of the practice.

Today, Grandview is heading towards its 35th anniversary of offering veterinary services in the community and remains devoted to caring for both pets and their people.
