Remember the day your pet came into your life?

Maybe they were scared, scrambling to hide behind an armchair or a bed. Or maybe they were excited, jumping around as if all was right with the world. We trust it wasn’t long before they became a loved member of your family. Through all of the ups and downs, pets are always our loyal friends. And while you can’t always count on them to behave, you can count on them to give you love and affection.

We’re there for the good times and the bad.

This love and affection are what inspire us at Grandview. You care for your pet and want to keep them as healthy as possible. We get it! Pets are some of the best life companions we can have. And caring for them can be complex. Throughout their life, you’ll be asked to make difficult choices. We want to be there for you and your pet during the good times and walk alongside you through the more difficult times.

A promise we take to heart.

To show you we mean it, we’ve developed The Grandview Promise: a promise to make the experience of looking after your pet’s health more enjoyable.

The Grandview Promise

Your Veterinary Team

Dr. James Schulenberg

A Niagara native, James grew up with many family pets, so his love for animals developed at a young age. Trained at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, he worked as a vet in the Flamborough area before joining the team at Grandview Animal Hospital. In December 2010, James became the owner of Grandview Animal Hospital. He enjoys building relationships with clients and their pets and has a special interest in internal medicine and animal nutrition. One of his favourite opportunities as a veterinarian was to travel to Tanzania with Christian Veterinary Missions to provide volunteer veterinary education, training and services. When he isn’t working, James enjoys hiking, boating, and spending time with family and friends. He lives in Niagara with his wife, Michelle, their four children and their many pets, including two dogs, cat, rabbit and rat. He’s also an active board member of Hamilton Regional Emergency Veterinary Clinic.

Dr. Ashley Jeffs

Ashley grew up on a hobby farm in Niagara, where her passion for animals began. After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, she pursued her childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian at St. George’s University in Grenada, completing her final year at the University of Georgia. For the first three years of her career, Ashley worked at a busy, small animal hospital in Rome, NY. In 2014, she started working at Grandview Animal Hospital. She has a special interest in soft tissue surgery. In her spare time, she enjoys travelling, staying active and spending time with her family — including her pets!

Dr. Emily Tate (Maternity Leave)

Emily graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College after completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. While she enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine and prides herself on providing gold-standard care to all of her patients, Emily has a special interest in Small Animal Surgery and Preventative Medicine. During her career thus far, she has developed a well-rounded repertoire of surgical procedures, and is grateful to be able to offer them to pets in need within the Winona region and beyond. During her studies, Emily spent several months involved in the international project ‘Global Vets’ in South America, which gave her the opportunity to provide Veterinary care to those who otherwise would not have access to it, as well as exposure to many exotic species. Throughout her youth, she has been fortunate enough to live in 7 different countries, giving her a world-wide perspective on animal care, as well as an abundance of fun stories to share with her patients and clients. Emily is proud to be an advocate for fear-free handling of her patients and prioritizes positive re-enforcement during all of her consultations, as she believes every patient deserves to look forward to visiting the Vet. When she’s out of the clinic, she keeps busy by going on hikes and camping trips with her partner and their two-year-old Dalmatian, Dexter.

Cindy (Maternity Leave)

Registered Veterinary Technician

Having grown up with a variety of pets, Cindy knew from a young age that she wanted to work with animals. Her passion for the health and wellbeing of animals made her decision to pursue veterinary technology at the Ridgetown Campus of the University of Guelph an easy one. She graduated with honours in 2011 and joined the Grandview team shortly after that. In the clinic, she especially enjoys surgery, diagnostics and connecting with clients over the love of their pets. Cindy is busy as she works part-time and is raising a young family but loves spending time camping, taking road trips, and playing soccer. She has a soft spot for senior pets that need adopting and hopes to take home a rescue dog in the near future.

Over 30 years of happy pets and happier owners.

Old owners of Grandview Animal Hospital
Grandview is located at the foot of the beautiful Niagara Escarpment in the heart of the Winona community. From this location, it has served owners and their pets in Hamilton, Stoney Creek, and the greater Grimsby and Smithville area for over 30 years.

In the early 1950s, Dr. Aiken, a family physician, built the building and began a family medical practice. The building across the road accommodated the local pharmacy and explains the presence of these office buildings in a largely residential area. Many of our longtime clients can recall coming to Grandview for their own doctor’s appointments as children and adults, only to have it serve as their pet’s hospital today! Over time, Dr. Aiken moved his practice into Grimsby, and the office building changed hands over the years, becoming both a construction company and a real estate office for awhile.

In 1989, Dr. Tom Nugent bought the building and established Grandview Animal Hospital. He served as veterinarian until his retirement in 2004. The practice was sold to Dr. Ivan Bos, and in 2007, Dr. James Schulenberg began working as a veterinarian with Dr. Bos. In 2010, Dr. Schulenberg took over ownership of the practice.

Today, Grandview is heading towards its 35th anniversary of offering veterinary services in the community and remains devoted to caring for both pets and their people.
